Great Northern 2-8-8-0 steam engine in the storage lines early in the 1960s.
Title:  Great Northern 2-8-8-0 steam engine in the storage lines early in the 1960s.
Description:  The GN stored many steam engines around the St Paul area some by the midway area up to the early 1960s. Only 9 GN steam engines were saved. The largest saved is a 4-8-4 Northern class in Havre, MT. This is from a slide scan so the quality is not the greatest plus it appears i have lint on the slide. The GN used these for hauling iron ore and for long freight trains. The boiler operated at 240 psi and generated 100,200 lb of tractive effort. These were converted to burn oil and the tenders oil burning and trailed tenders carried 17,000 gallons of water and 4,600 gallons of fuel oil. Horsepower is estimated at over 6,700 HP, but that is difficult to estimate for steam engines since its based on tractive effort and wheel adheasion to the rails, and is also based on the skills of the fireman with the boiler fire. It was a big deal for a single crew to be in command of a 6,700+ HP single engine in the 1940s and 1950s. The GN added roller bearing wheels in the early 1940s. This engine weighed over 280 tons. A modern diesel engine on average is 4,000 HP in the year 2011.

Description:  The Great Northern ran a few ore trains from the mines in Northern MN near Duluth down to Minneapolis MN and then transfered the trains to the CB&Q in St Paul MN. The CB&Q would run them to Chicago. Most of the GN ore was sent to ore docks near Duluth by ore boat. The BNSF still runs a few direct ore trains from Duluth to Chicago by rail. GN Union Yard in Mpls MN near the University of MN was their main yard on the east end of the System. It was as big as Northtown yard at one time. The CNW and CGW had large yards here also.

Great Northern train headed from Mpls yard at University of MN to Wazata in 1967.
Title:  Great Northern train headed from Mpls yard at University of MN to Wazata in 1967.
Description:  This train is in back of the main Mpls MN GN depot on a sunny day in 1967. The main GN mainline ran from Mpls via St. Cloud to Seattle and runs by Northtown. The secondary GN mainline is still in use by the BNSF and ran from the Mpls Jct wye past Wazata on Lake Minnetonka to Willmar. Some of the GN F units survived on the BN to 1984. The curved tracks to the right are the depot track leads to the Mpls GN depot. The MTM saved one of the GN F units stored at Jackson St. in St Paul, but it was repainted NP. Hopefully someday they can power it up and repaint it in its true GN colors. The MTM roundhouse at Jackson St. in St Paul has about 8 GN passenger cars saved in GN paint and runs train rides in Osceola Mn 30 min out of St Paul past Stillwater. Train rides are Sat from 10-4.

Great Northern SD9 at Minneapolis Junction in 1969.
Title:  Great Northern SD9 at Minneapolis Junction in 1969.
Description:  The Great Northern had a major roundhouse and deisel house at Mpls Jct by the Mpls Depot. They also serviced engines here for their major Great Northern University of Minnesota yard at Hwy 280. The GN backshops for rebuilds was at Dale St in St Paul MN near the Jackson St shops. The GN ordered their SD9s without dynamic brakes, so that is a way to determine GN or CBQ. The Jackson St Shops in St Paul has an operating SD9. SD9s survived working on the BNSF until 2011.
