Great Northern 2-8-8-0 steam engine in the storage lines early in the 1960s.
The GN stored many steam engines around the system thru the 1960s. This is at Superior WI GN yard near Duluth. The GN used these for hauling iron ore as an N3 class on the MN iron range. The boiler operated at 240 psi. Horsepower is estimated at over 6,400 HP. This engine weighed over 280 tons and 110 feet long. A modern diesel engine on average is 4,400 HP in the year 2011. Some N3 class steam engines were still running in 1954. This operated out of the Allouez GN roundhouse.
