Great Northern ore train at Minneapolis MN Union Yard in 1967.
The Great Northern ran a few ore trains from the mines in Northern MN near Duluth down to Minneapolis MN and then transfered the trains to the CB&Q in St Paul MN. The CB&Q would run them to Chicago. Most of the GN ore was sent to ore docks near Duluth by ore boat. The BNSF still runs a few direct ore trains from Duluth to Chicago by rail. GN Union Yard in Mpls MN near the University of MN was their main yard on the east end of the System. It was as big as Northtown yard at one time. The CNW and CGW had large yards here also.
