Description:  East Altoona. Here is an image by an unidentified photographer of the southern side of the double-tracked Coaling Wharf in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1932. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3667, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1918 and retired in August of 1953 after 35 years of service. In this context, its tender is being replenished with fuel. On the tracks above it are several hopper cars about to have their contents emptied into the bins below. This structure was replaced by an all-concrete coaling tipple during World War II. William E. Burket Collection.

Shown here are two unidentified Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives near the Coaling Tipple, partially visible at the far right. Notable are the two "coast-to-coast" tenders and the water tank covered with icicles on what looks to be a very frigid day! Photo taken from the adjoining Westbound Receiving Yard. This photo was a gift to me from Mr. Carberry. He lived with his family on Bel Aire Road in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and was a career railroader who served in those Yards for many years.
