East Altoona. Here is an image of an official photo that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 4 November 1943. Shown here is the Pennsylvania Railroad's 1,250-ton capacity East Altoona Coaling Tipple. It was built during the early days of World War II and demolished in April of 1968. Four steam locomotives could be replenished with both coal and sand simultaneously! William E. Burket Collection.
