Double Heading Pair of PRR Steam Locomotive Helpers
Here is a beautiful action shot of a pair of Pennsylvania RR steam locomotivhelpers assisting a freight train around Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, PA. Robert Hess (see comment below) has identified the first helper loco as a PRR J1 or J1a class 2-10-4 while the second may be an I1sa 2-10-0 loco. Very much appreciate the help in correctly identifying the locos, Robert! Unfortunately, no additional information like date or photographer as well as locomotive numbers was given for the photo. But, it stands as a true iconic view into the steam era!

Robert Hess General The lead engine is surely a J1 or J1a class 2-10-4. The radial firebox, feedwater heater and large sand box (dome) as well as the 16 wheel tender as well as the distinctive cab with rounded front window all mark this as one of the 2-10-4s. The second engine is an I1sa with a 9,000 gallon flat sided tender. One of the Baldwin-built engines with feedwater heater visible on the fireman's side. It's still a great photo! 1/25/2021 11:23:03 AM
Tom Beckett General Killer shot, though I bet the photographer didn't think much of it at the time, since it was a common sight in those days. I can almost feel the ground shaking and hear the rods clanking. 1/26/2021 4:28:48 AM
Butch Getz General Thanks for sharing the "monster" pushers! 1/26/2021 9:30:25 AM
