Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad PMC ( Passenger Motor Car ) 9767 at Saint Joseph, Missouri on February 16, 1958, duplicate slide by Al Chione, Chuck Zeiler collection. The following is from the book, The Burlington in Transition, by Bernard G. Corbin and Joseph C. Hardy:

Number 9767 was built in October 1930 by Pullman ( body c/n 458 ), powered by an EMC No. 148 400 horsepower diesel. Originally built with a 15 foot mail apartment, it was converted in 1930 by the CB&Q to a 30 foot mail apartment.Like all self-propelled cars, the 9767 has a varied and interesting career, though perhaps more distinguished than most. In her later years she was painted a distinctive silver gray and pulled one of the finest riding cars on the system, the Silver Pendulum, between Saint Joseph and Brookfield, Missouri, where the train connected with the Kansas City Zephyr. When this passenger train was discontinued, both the 9767 and the Silver Pendulum were moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to become the Lincoln - Saint Joseph via Wymore Local passenger. Motor failure due to a broken connecting rod did severe damage to the diesel and the 9767 was taken out of service in December 1961. The PMC body waqs set on the ground at Beardstown, Illinois to serve as an enginemen's locker room. However the Silver Pendulum, built in 1941, saw more service.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad PMC ( Passenger Motor Car ) 9772 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in July 1961, photographer unknown, duplicate slide by Al Chione, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 9772 was built by EMC-Pullman in November 1928 ( Shop No. 299 ) as gas-electric number 570, renumbered to 9570 in May 1930, later rebuilt to a diesel-electric and renumbered to 9772. The trailing coach was number 6000, named "Silver Pendulum".

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class PMC (Passenger Motor Car) 9772 near Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in February 1962, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. In tow is coach number 6000, named 'Silver Pendulum', an orphan in the Q's passenger department. It was built by Pacific Railway Equipment Company in 1942, one of three built ( the Great Northern and Santa Fe also each got one). Its suspension was as its name implies; the car would swing like a pendulum in curves similar to a Talgo train. However, this did not play well with other cars so the car spent its final years in the service pictured.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad coach 6000, named Silver Pendulum, eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 20, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is a relatively rare car, only three were built by the Pacific Railway Equipment Company. This one was built January 1942 as a 60 seat coach. One was built for the Great Northern, and one for the Santa Fe. CB&Q #6000 is seen here in the consist of Train #48, which combined parts of the Northern Pacific's 'Western Star' and the Great Northern's 'The Blackhawk', for forwarding to Chicago from Minneapolis and St. Paul. The name 'Silver Pendulum' was derived from the car's design, which was described in both Railway Age (Jan. 24, 1942) and Railway Mechanical Engineer (Feb. 1942) as; 'Pendulum car truck is designed to support the car body 14 inches above the center of gravity and secure easy riding around curves at high speed'. There is a photo to go with that statement showing the truck, and it appears that the springs and stabilizers extend upward into the carbody a couple of feet, which probably explains the lack of windows over the truck centers.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 6000, named SILVER PENDULUM, at the Zephyr Pit in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown date, photograph by William A. Raia, Chuck Zeiler collection. I estimate the date at around 1963, based on a photo I shot in 1963 of this car in service in and out of Chicago. This was a relatively rare car, only three were built by the Pacific Railway Equipment Company. This one was built January 1942 as a 60 seat coach. In addition, one was built for the Great Northern, and one for the Santa Fe.
