Amtrak train No. 58 – the northbound PANAMA LIMITED – was highballing through EAST BRIGDE JUNCTION, probably doing the speed limit of 60, on its way out of the New Orleans area. The train consisted of Illinois Central E8A units 4028 (in Amtrak colors), 4023 and 4027 with 14 cars, including deadheading dome-sleepers 9212 and 9211. The rest of the train consisted of baggage car 1020, 6-6-4 sleepers 2153 SILVER IRIS and 2152 SILVER HYACINTH, dining car 8029, lounge car 3353 and seven coaches: 5459, 5248, 5266, 5267, 4843, 4402 and 5233. The 4028 was passing a slightly newer General Motors product, a 1967 Oldsmobile CUTLASS coupe. |

Gulf, Mobile & Ohio GP35 632 and GP30 501 were at CANAL YARD in New Orleans. They had come in on train No. 33 and had been turned so they could go out on No. 32. Train Nos. 32/33 almost always ran with three locomotives, but a 2-unit set showed up occasionally. (approximate date of photo) |

Illinois Central SD40R 6071, seen here on a southbound grain train at Hammond, Louisiana with the 6003, was a locomotive celebrity. It had been built in July 1964 as EMD 434 and was the very first locomotive to use EMD’s model 645E prime mover. The 434 and pre-production SD40 testbed units 434A-434H were built on SD35 frames, so they were five feet shorter than production SD40 units. The 434 was sold to the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio in May 1966 to replace wrecked GP35 614 and it became GM&O 950, then ICG 6071 and finally IC 6071. The Canadian National donated it to the MONTICELLO RAILWAY MUSEUM in March 2009. |
