GN 0-6-0 #27 - Great Northern Builder's Photo |
Description: |
This appears to be a builtder's photo of Great Northern 0-6-0 #27 at the Brooks Locomotive Works in Dunkirk, NY in 1882. RRPA data base would not accept the 1882 build date. This was a few decades before Brooks would join the ALCO group. It was originally built as St Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba #194 in 1882 but renumbered GN #194 in 1892. It was renumbered again to GN @27 in November of 1899. After a combined 34 years of service, the loco was scrapped in September of 1916. Original specs - 48" drivers (reblt to 49"), modest 140 psi boiler pressure, 17x24" cylinders, modest engine weight of 67,050 lb, modest tractive effort of 16,840 lb. The loco was a class A-4. |

Sharp little switcher with a head of steam sits in the Minneapolis yard waiting for its next assignment when captured by the photographer possibly named Cranston (partially obscured info on back & front). Note the photographer's head shadow at the bottom of the photo. Although not confirmed, this might be an example of an Alco-Schenectady switcher built circa 1910's. |

CIL 0-6-0 #37 - Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville (Monon) |
Description: |
Typical 0-6-0 switcher built by Aloc-Brooks in October, 1923 originally as CIL #37. It was later renumbered CIL #97 in Octover of 1946 just before being retired in December of 1946. It was finally sold for scrapo in March of 1947. On the back of the photo, it lists Anderson, IN, as the location for the photo. Does anyone know why and how a Monon would have ended up in Anderson, IN, tht is, if it is a correct location? No date was given for the photo so an approximate one was used. C.C. Grayson photo credit. |

SOO 0-6-0T X90 - Minneapolis, St Paul, Sault Sainte Marie Ry |
Description: |
Beginning as an 0-6-6T switcher (Minneapolis Sault Ste. Marie & Atlantic #38) built in 1887 by the Rhode Island Locomotive Works in Providence, it was rebuilt into an 0-6-0 in 1888 and numbered 321, and rebuilt again in June 1932 into this cute 0-6-0T (class B) configuration for switching duties around the Shoreham Shops in Minneapolis. After serving well into the 1950's, it was converted back to a traditional 0-6-0 tender based switcher and preserved in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Note the fireman posed on the front as the engineer backs the loco. The date of this unretouched sepia photo is approximate - no photographer listed. |

SOO 0-6-0 No. 321 on display at Pinecrest Historical Village in Town of Manitowoc Rapids, Manitowoc Co., WI on 7 Oct. '14. Built as MSSM&A No. 38 by Rhode Island Locomotive Works in Oct. 1887; renumbered SOO No. 321 after MStP&SSM was formed. Later modified as 0-6-0T and renumbered X90 (side tanks added in lieu of the original tender) and assigned as shop switcher at SOO's Shoreham Shops at Minneapolis, MN. At some point after it was retired it underwent cosmetic restoration to its original tender configuration. It is the oldest surviving SOO steam locomotive and 1 of 3 remaining SOO 0-6-0s, unless the internet is lying. In addition to the historic photograph of this locomotive on this website, another can be found at: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/soo/soo-x90dsa.jpg. WC caboose WC 99006 and an unlabeled flatcar are partially visible behind the locomotive. The SOO Collins, WI depot is partially visible on the right. |

RUT 0-6-0 #100 - Rutland |
Description: |
Busy at work shuffling passenger cars is this Rutland 0-6-0 yard switcher #100. Built by Alco-Cooke in June of 1907, it was originally numbered 445 but in 1914 it was renumbered RUT 100. There is some discrepancy in the date it was scrapped. One source has it scrapped in September of 1924 and another in 1951, yet the photo is dated August of 1932. Unless there were two #100's, I side with the 1951 date! Specs - serial #43035, class B-2a, 54" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, engine weight of 136,000 lb, tractive effort of 29,300 lb. W.E. Rutland Railroad 0-6-0 steam locomotive firebox |
Description: |
All that's left of Rutland Railroad 0-6-0 steam locomotive 100. It was used to good effect in the shop tour to point out the crown sheet and the staybolts to our tour group. Since it's an ex-Rutland artifact I suspect it got to Age of Steam Roundhouse by way of Steamtown / Bellows Falls. |
