SOU 6905
Title:  SOU 6905
Description:  A colorful assortment of power sits at the Ivy City Engine Terminal in Washington DC on a September day in 1975. Front and center is Southern Railway E8A 6905 (ex-SOU 2928, built 9/51), still in passenger service for the Southern Railway (which did not initially join the Amtrak system when it was formed in 1971). Hiding behind the E-unit is Baltimore & Ohio 6606, a steam-generator equipped GP9 used on Washington to Baltimore commuter trains. And behind that is an assortment of Amtrak SDP40F diesels (582 and, behind that, 609, with others not visible).

Peanut Special
Title:  Peanut Special
Description:  For the inauguration of Jimmy Carter as president on 20 January 1977, the Carter Campaign Committee chartered an 18-car train to bring supporters from Plains, Georgia to Washington and back. Even though the official trip originated and terminated at Plains, the train was assembled at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal and dead-headed to Plains and back via the Louisville & Nashville and Seaboard Coast Line. Here is the train about 20 minutes after leaving NOUPT, stopped at the L&N's Gentilly Yard in eastern New Orleans. The water was being drained out of the locomotives' internal water tanks because of concern about the units' weight and the water sloshing around.

The PEANUT SPECIAL consisted of SDP40Fs 582, 595 and 588 with coaches 5404, 5475 and 5442; 11-bedroom sleepers 2252 STAR LEAF, 2263 PLACID LAKE and 2203 SILVER SWAN; 10-6 sleeper 2638 PACIFIC TRAIL, lounge 3409, dining room car 8800, kitchen-dormitory 8801, sleeper-lounge 3205 GULF STREAM, 11-bedroom cars 2201 SILVER QUAIL, 2250 STAR BAY, 2215 INDIAN MAID, 2211 INDIAN DRUM and 2214 INDIAN LAKE; and 10-6 sleepers 2626 PACIFIC PLATEAU and 2618 PACIFIC LODGE.

PEANUT SPECIAL
Title:  PEANUT SPECIAL
Description:  At 1:00 PM on Tuesday 18 January 1977 a trio of Amtrak SDP40F units - 582, 595 and 588 - was about to pull out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with the 18-car PEANUT SPECIAL. All of the train's trucks and underbody had just received a coat of fresh black paint at NOUPT. The train was made up of three coaches, four sleepers, a piano-lounge car, a full diner, a kitchen-dormitory car, a sleeper-lounge and seven more sleepers. It deadheaded to Plains, Georgia via the L&N and SCL so it could bring supporters of Jimmy Carter to his presidential inauguration in Washington on 20 January. After the inauguration it returned to Plains and then deadheaded back to New Orleans behind the 643, 588 and 595.

Title:  AMTK 582 southbound at the Amtrak Station
Description:  Watering the engines and the rest of the train always made this operation interesting, if you were too close to the hoses you could end up getting soaked.

AMTK 582
Title:  AMTK 582
Description:  One of the interesting thing about the Big 40's was the numbers added on the "B" end of the engine. I believe after the initial order was deleivered from EMD the Black was added to the upper part and brought around. At some point the vertical numbers of the unit were added but this was not always consistent. On my photo of 649 in this album it has no numbers and of course was the last of the big SDP40F's delivered to Amtrak.

Title:  AMTK 582 and another big red nosed 40 bringing the Meteor or Champion into the Amtrak Station
Description:  Next to the 645, the 582 was another unit I would usually try to catch to photograph. It was the only locomotive in the Florida Power Pool out of the middle third of the 40s.

AMTK 582 - A Big Red Nose!
Title:  AMTK 582 - A Big Red Nose!
Description:  Even though I worked in Reservations, then Training and finally in a support role for the Field Sales Department in my almost 23 years at Amtrak there were a lot of fond memories both from getting to ride the trains pulled by these brutes as well as spending lots of free time photographing them.
