PRR 5823, BP-60, 1952
Title:  PRR 5823, BP-60, 1952
Description:  Lorenz. Here is a photo via Bob Lorenz that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1952. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5823 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BP-60's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and classified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5823 was constructed in March of 1947 and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, they're descending the Allegheny Mountains and rounding the Curve with a mail and express train bound for Altoona, Harrisburg, and points East. These locomotives have no dynamic braking capability, so that's brake shoe smoke from just 24 pairs of wheels! (Gift from Brad Mann.)
