Two each of tunnel motor and regular version SD40s bring an SP westbound past the Caliente oak tree. SP 8317 was the lead unit on the helper involved in the 1989 Duffy Street runaway and derailment at San Bernardino, and was later rebuilt as PNCX 3012, HLCX 6320, HLCX 6202. SP 8317 was the lead unit on the helper of the Cajon Pass runaway in 1989 which wrecked at Duffy Street in San Bernardino. Its inoperable dynamic brakes were a contributing factor to the accident.
