Blackhawk. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Fred Byerly that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 19 August 1962. Photo Caption: "AS-616, Pittsburgh & West Virginia No. 40. Altoona, Pa. Aug. 19, 1962." P&WV 40 is an AS-616 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in May of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, purchased by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1963 and renumbered "8114," then retired in September of 1967 after just 16 years of combined service. In this context, it's idling away near the 4th Street Footbridge and SOUTH Tower. The road number of the other locomotive pictured here is not recorded. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Baldwins in Action ~ On North-Eastern Railroads" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (892-40). |
