A CN unit train of auto racks parallels Union St. and passes the former Monroe St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 14 Feb. '21. To the left, CN 5341 sorts cars at the north end of the yard. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. The building partially visible to the right, 716 Harrison St. (I believe the historic address is 520 Union St.), still used by Neenah Foundry, I believe, was recently spruced up with a fresh coat of paint and some new doors last year. There was no overhead door on this end until a month or two ago. The Winneconne Ave. overpass stands beyond that. It was erected ca. 1988 in order to eliminate the busiest grade crossing in the area. |
