PRR New Portage Tunnel, c. 1890
iLocations. Here is an image showing the western portal of the Pennsylvania Railroad's New Portage Tunnel in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, c. 1890. Photo by William H. Rau. This bore was completed in 1856 for the State-owned Allegheny Portage Railroad, later owned but little used by the PRR, and virtually abandoned for almost 50 years. Around 1903, however, it was renovated and double-tracked, and became the PRR's primary tunnel for eastbound traffic.
