PRR 8666, AS-18AM, 1962
Oil Power. Here is an original photo that I took near Cresson, Pennsylvania, during April of 1962. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8666 and #8661. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pulling a string of loaded hopper cars toward Cresson, where they will merge with the mainline and proceed down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. Photo taken from a moving automobile at a place where the Irvona Branch parallels US Route 22 (Admiral Peary Highway), just West of Cresson.
