PRR 6715, M-1B, 1957
Northbound Coal. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken in Elmira, New York, on 5 May 1957. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6715, an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an M-1A during April of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B by 1953, and retired in September of 1959 after 29 years of faithful service. It's pulling a southbound mixed-cargo freight train out of the Elmira Yard. Note the "doghouse" on the coast-to-coast tender. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-22).
