Powerful 1947 Baldwin built 4-8-4 "Potomac"-type locomotive - WM preferred calling these brutes "Potomacs" rather than the conventional Northerns. Specifics - J-1 class, 69" drivers, impressive 255 psi boiler pressure, 26.5x32" cylinders, engine weight of 5-6,500 lb, tractive effort of 70,591 lb. The class was retired in 1954. This appears to be a 1970-80's reprint. No location, date or photographer was given for this photo although it very well might be Cumberland or Hagerstown yard. Does anyone recognize the background? |
