| Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9927A at the Zephyr Pit (14th Street) in Chicago, Illinois on March 14, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1949 (c/n 4435) on EMD Order E792, it was retired in September 1969 and dismantled in December. This location was known as the Zephyr Pit, built for the first Zephyrs on the west side of the south throat of Union Station. This was adjacent to the CB&Q coach yards. Before this facility was built, the steam locomotives would cut off their trains and run out to the roundhouse at Western Avenue, about a mile or so further to the west. |
