At the time of this photo CN had recently purchased many GMTX SD60's that were once part of the Oakway lease fleet that spent many years on lease exclusively to Burlington Northern and used mainly in the Powder River Basin lugging coal trains though some would occasionally break free into intermodal and manifest freight service. In its new CN paint the 5439 seems right at home lugging a slop freight through the flat Mississippi Delta. |

Busted & Broken hangs out at Money, MS While not the most glamorous image it’s a reminder of what railroaders worst nightmares are made of. While a railfan can sit around wanting if not demanding trains, worrying over what’s leading and how many shots they can get, those who make a living where railfans invite themselves upon have far deeper responsibilities and concerns. Few in the railfan community appreciate or un.derstand what these men and women are up against. It may be being called for a run that gets put into a siding because it’s a lowly local resulting in them dying out on hours of service without turning a wheel in a seemingly losing battle to get over the road and accomplish something never mind them baking in a unit with no a/c, hows their train going to handle in a sharp curve as the terrain ascends and descends, distant and disinterested management, worn out power, a failing PTC system that mocks all reason, a crossing well known for chance taking motorist, trespassing fisherman on a trestle that they bare down on in a curve with little notice to get stopped in time, struggling to see a signal in heavy rain or fog, a walking inspection of an 11,000’ freight designated as a Key Train from head to tail then back up to head in hot humid conditions on ballast dealing with mosquitoes and snakes, what short sighted moron they get paired up with for a run or hanging on the side of a RBOX boxcar at 3:36am in a freezing rain. Then there’s this. Everyone wants to be a part of the action or is an expert until this happens. |

Only a couple minutes walk from this location is where Emmett Till was murdered in August 1955. Two of the Prescott & Northwestern’s three 70-ton General Electric locos were parked in their shop building at Prescott, Arkansas while their third unit was sitting outside. The 23 was serial number 32200, built in June 1954 for the P&NW; the 24 was 32283, built in April 1955 as Valley & Siletz 11; and the 25 was 32595, a very late model unit with 720 horsepower instead of 600, built in July 1956 as Sacramento Northern 202. These three units were replaced by No. 26 – a former Amtrak SSB1200 – and were scrapped about 40 years after this photo was taken. |

| Description: |
Built by EMD in August of 1961 as ATSF 1128 (serial #26835) but was renumbered as ATSF 2128. It was rebuilt to GP20u in September of 1978 and renumbered ATSF 3028. Eventually it was transferred as BNSF 2018 on 10/27/1998. The loco was retired from BNSF on 11/24/1999 and was sold to PRC and eventually LHRR. No location or photographer listed for the slide but based on other photos taken around the same time, the loco may have been in the Chicago area when this was taken.. |
