CN, former MILW, Rails at Kiel, WI |
Description: |
Looking northwest along the CN, former MILW, rails from Fremont St. at Kiel, WI, on 30 May '20. To the left are remnants of a spur which once served several rail served businesses. Land O'Lakes Industrial Cheese, 1125 8th St., can be seen in the background to the right. They used to receive rail service, but I don't think they have for a while. Maybe the recent expansion will mean renewal of rail service. According to https://www.landolakesinc.com/ on 20 Nov. '19: "At Kiel, we’ve undertaken a multi-year modernization project to allow us to make room to receive more member milk and deliver larger blocks of cheese. These infrastructure improvements include modernizing cheese making and packaging, expanding capacity and making whey processing improvements. When completed in mid-2019, Kiel will be able to handle 3.2 million pounds of milk per day and produce both 40-pound and 640-pound blocks of cheese." |

Description: |
A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., stands to the left. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 (construction commenced the previous year). It was briefly (ca. 1893) known as the Northern Pacific Hotel, almost certainly a reference to the short-lived corporate relationship between the WC and NP railroads. It was owned by Joe Mayer [Meyer] ca. 1907, still known as the Murer House (likely Joseph A. Mayer). It was owned by Ole M. Lyken by 1914, it was known as the Lyken Hotel ca. 1920. Circa 1923-24 it was a grocery store owned by Mrs. Mary E. Lyken, Ole’s widow (he passed away in ’23). From at least 1928 until 1939, it was the Mayerl Grocery, owned by Mayme Mayerl. At some point it was turned into a tavern and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. Previous names of the bar include (in no particular order), Susie’s Trackside, Chesapeake Pub, Gigi’s, Mychal’s Bar (Mychal’s On Sherry Street), Sit and Sip Tavern, et al. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The parking lot to the left was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. |

IC 3108 and GTW 4907 |
Description: |
An unusually small CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 7 Jun. '20. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of IC 3108 is, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001. |

Description: |
FTSX 100104 MW was part of the consist of a CN through freight crossing N. Lake St. via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 7 Jun. '20. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. |

First flash |
Description: |
The first of a series, the signal at Davidson Road in Siloam Springs was flashing yellow when I pulled up, approach medium. The indication tells the engineer to pass at medium speed, to approach the next signal at medium speed, defined as half of maximum authorized speed. Trains exceeding medium speed must reduce to medium. The next signal, Control Point North Siloam Springs, will display approach, or medium clear. |

The yellow has flashed on again, inidicating approach medium. This aspect will display as yellow over green on a two head signal, more common in the east. The next signal at CP North Siloam Springs, displays yellow, since the siding switch at South Siloam Springs is reversed, causing that signal to be red. The next southbound will meet a northbound at Siloam in about 20 minutes. |
