A CN local hugs the bluff, passes the Vulcan Heritage Park, and passes the S. Memorial Dr. bridge over the Fox River as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 30 Oct. '20. Local was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The MILW rails used to run parallel along this side of the active rails. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.' |

A CN local crosses Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails with 6 cars at Stroebe, WI, on 31 Oct. '20. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The former C&NW rails are in the foreground. The Great Northern Corp. facility is partially visible in the background. They have a spur, but have not received rail service for quite a while. In fact, the turnout connecting their spur to the main line was torn out earlier this year. |

I usually put the camera away after I shoot the locomotives when a container train rolls by. I had to do a double take and hastily grab the camera when I noticed this car. This was the better of the spray-and-pray shots. |

This photo illustrated the entire roster of the Bonhomie & Hattiesburg Southern on 5 July 1961. Prairie 250 (BLW 59239) was ready to go to work at the railroad’s yard in Hattiesburg, Mississippi while Mikado 300 (BLW 58241) was having its smokebox cleaned. This photo was taken on the day the railroad’s former master mechanic Grover Cleveland Logan was laid to rest. Mr. Logan had been responsible for keeping the B&HS in steam; but several months later, on 21 October the railroad bought a pair of former Wabash SW1’s, and after they arrived, steam was dead. The 250 was sold to the Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern in Pennsylvania, while the 300 was placed on display next to the Southern Railway’s station in Hattiesburg. |
