Description:  Southern Pacific GP20 4053 and GP30 5011 were trailing Southern GP30’s 2537 and 2604 on Southern Railway train No. 194, This was the Southern’s portion of a Houston-Birmingham run-through train which was inaugurated in 1969. Today the 2604 was flying green flags, and No. 194 was running as the first section of No. 168. (approximate date of photo)

Title:  PC 2256, GP-35, 1968
Description:  Birmingham. Here is an original photo that I took of a Penn Central Railroad train near Birmingham, Pennsylvania, during May of 1968. Shown here are PC engine #2256 and Southern Pacific Railroad engine #4068. Both were built by GM-EMD. #2256 is a radio-equipped GP-35 built in May of 1964 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #4068 is a GP-20 built in 1962 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They are pulling a westbound autorack train. Lots of new Chrysler products on-board! Also visible on the right are my Penn State geology buddies George Howorth and John "Rob" Powanda. (Many thanks to Mr. James Taylor for identifying the Southern Pacific unit!)

Description:  Southern Pacific GP20 4078 and Cotton Belt GP20R 4137 were tied up at the Louisville & Nashville's GOULDING YARD near Pensacola, along with L&N GP35 1115 on the right and GP30 1001 in the background. SP locomotives became regular visitors to north Florida around five years earlier when the SP, L&N and Seaboard Coat Line began a run-through train between Houston and Jacksonville, via New Orleans and Chattahoochee.

Description:  NS No. 193, the run-through train from Birmingham to Houston via the SP, heads up the Huey P. Long Bridge behind GP50's 7024, 7038 and 7028. SP GP20 4085 is on an intermodal train heading for the Seaboard System's Gentilly Yard, and it is waiting for No. 193 to get through East Bridge Junction so it can head east onto the NS BACK BELT.
