SOU 2923
Title: SOU 2923
Description: It's about 4:45 P.M. on a Friday afternoon as New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal SW8 No. 3 pulls Southern E8A's 6912 and 2923 out of the station. The two units had arrived at 3:25 on a 13-car ORANGE BELT TOUCHDOWN CLUB special, en route from Florida to Baton Rouge. The train moved from Florida to Birmingham over the SCL, and then into New Orleans over the Southern. It headed into NOUPT, then a few minutes later Illinois Central E-units 4027 and 2021 backed onto the opposite end of the train, and it left for Baton Rouge at 4:30. This was the last football special to LSU! The train left Baton Rouge the next evening, after LSU beat Florida 48-7, arrived in NOUPT at midnight, and left for Florida at 1:30 Sunday morning.

The train was made up entirely of former Seaboard Coast Line cars, all owned by Amtrak: 4-section/4-roomette/1-compartment/5-bedroom 6406 PINEHURST as a dormitory (still lettered SEABOARD), diners 5916 and 5922, 10-roomette/6-bedroom cars 6636 DARLINGTON COUNTY, 6627 WEST PALM BEACH and 6637 DUVAL COUNTY, 11-bedroom car 6108 NATURAL BRIDGE, blunt-end lounge 5831, diner 5905, 11-bedroom car 6111 MOUNT VERNON, and 10-6 sleepers 6628 WINTER HAVEN, 6623 ST. PETERSBURG and 6638 EDGECOMBE COUNTY.

Birmingham Special
Title: Birmingham Special
Description: Southern Railway’s BIRMINGHAM SPECIAL (Nos. 17/18) was down to three cars when it was photographed at the remains of Birmingham’s TERMINAL STATION in July 1970, across the platform from the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. This train consisted of FP7 6147, E8A 2926, two Norfolk & Western lightweight coaches and a Southern heavyweight baggage car. On its way out of town it would stop at Norris Yard to pick up some intermodal cars before heading north to Washington, D.C. On 11 August - shortly after this photo was taken - the train was discontinued in the State of Tennessee, and two weeks later is was abolished in Alabama as well. (approximate date)

SOU E8A 2926
Title: SOU E8A 2926
Description: Southern E8A 2926 was on the SOUTHERN CRESCENT at Slidell, Louisiana. This unit was unusual because it retained its 2900-series number when it was repainted into the new green scheme. The railroad decided to renumber E8A units 2923-2929 as 6900-6905 and 6916 shortly after it adopted the green paint scheme, so almost all of the other 2900-series units came out of the paint shop with new numbers. The 2926 was renumbered 6903, and became New Jersey Department of Transportation 4333 after it was retired by the Southern in 1979. (approximate date of photo)

Southern No. 2
Title: Southern No. 2
Description: On 1 February 1970 Southern Railway train No. 48 the SOUTHERNER was redesignated No. 2 the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. On Tuesday 20 October 1970 the train went from daily to tri-weekly operation between New Orleans and Birmingham. Here is train No. 2 on Wednesday 21 October with two sets of power, because the equipment that had arrived in New Orleans on Monday evening did not go out on Tuesday morning. Notice the Automatic Train Stop contact shoe on the third axle of the 2927's front truck. ATS had been deactivated on 15 May 1970. That's the photographer's yellow Volkswagen Beetle parked on the platform.

The Southern Crescent
Title: The Southern Crescent
Description: The passenger train tracks from Union Station go through the tunnel under First Street right behind the Capitol at the left. The freight tracks make a much wider swing behind the Capitol and to the north never needing a tunnel. The catenary is for the PRR electric freight locomotives so they can make it to the Potomac Yards and does not go through the tunnel. Pantographs would not fit. The shot was taken from L'Enfant Plaza.

The SOUTHERN CRESCENT
Title: The SOUTHERN CRESCENT
Description: Southern Railway train No. 2 - the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT - was accelerating away from its station stop at Slidell, Louisiana behind E8A's 2928 and 6914. The 2928's oscillating headlight had been removed long ago, and the twin sealed beam light had been relocated into the upper position, but the lower light opening had not very been covered over. Many Southern E-units ran around like this in the 1960's, but by this time most of the few remaining E's had their lower opening covered up or had received nose doors without a light opening. Southern Railway Train No. 2
Title: Southern Railway Train No. 2
Description: Southern Railway train No. 2 – the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT – was in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal awaiting its 7:00 AM departure with a trio of freshly-repainted E8A locomotives. Lead unit 2929 was unusual because it had received the new green paint scheme while retaining its original 2900-series road number. Most of the seven 2900-series E8’s received new 6900-series numbers when they were repainted green in 1972. Notice that the trucks and underbody tanks had not been repainted on any of the locos!
