Description:
This Baldwin built 2-8-2 locomotive was a class Q-3 and originally carried the number 4531 but in 1957, it was renumbered BO 330. Sadly the loco was retired and scrapped a year later in August of 1958 at Newark, NJ. Specs - serial #49467, class Q-3, 64" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26x30" cylinders, engine weight of 292,000 lb, tractive effrort of 53,800 lb. Bob Rathke was the original photographer and this print appears in several webpages.

Description:
Nice to post a photo of a Hoosier based locomotive like this B&O 2-8-2 Mikado #454. Built by Baldinw in December of 1922, it was originally numbered BO 4481 but rebuilt in 1941 with 70" drivers, a new tractive effort of 65,500 lb and reclassified as Q-4C. It lasted until being retired in December of 1958 at the Willard, Ohio yard. It had 64" drivers, generated a respectable boiler pressure of 205 psi for its 24"x32" cylinders, had an engine weight of 276,050 lb and produced a tractive effort of 50,184 lb. Later it was superheated by the B"&O shops and reclassified as Q-1aa. The class was retired and scrapped by 1955. The date is an approximation and no photographer was identified.

Long before a GP40 wore the B&O number 4041, this Baldwin 2-8-2 Mikado had the honor. Built in April of 1911, it was rebuilt and reclassified several times during its years of service. The loco was retired and scrapped in May of 1954 at Fairmont, WV. Specs - serial #36408, class Q-1, 64" drivers, 205 psi boiler pressure, 24x32" cylinders, engine weight of 276,050 lb, tractive effort of 50,184 lb. This is an example of a little later Baldwin built Mikado. Constructed in 1913, it had slight differences with its earlier sister. It had 64" drivers, developed slightly less boiler pressure (190 psi) for the 26"x32" cylinders. The engine weight was slightly heavier at 284,500 lb and produced a slightly larger tractive effort of 54,587 lb. The class was retired and scrapped by 1941. The date and location are approximations. With a trail of smoke heading skyward, this Baldwin Pacific built between 1920-22 moves through the B&O yard at Garrett, Indiana on this day in 1955. The Q-4 class loco had 64" drivers, developed 190 psi boiler pressure for its 26"x32" cylinders (dia & stroke). With an engine weight of 327,400 lb, it generatred a tractive effort of 63,206 lb. Great action shot of what this 2-8-2 Mikado was built to do - handle long drags of freight cars! Built by Baldwin in October of 1922 as BO #4477 (serial #55774), it served for nearly 34 years before being scrapped at Mt Clare, MD yard in November of 1956. . Specs - Q-4 class, 64" drivers, 220 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine weight of 327,400 lb, tractive effort of 63,200 lb. Sadly, no date, location or photographer was listed for this photo.

BO 2-8-2 #4460 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:
Here is a solid looking 2-8-2 Mikado caught standing outside the Glenwood Shops area in Philadelphia, PA. Built by Baldwin in December of 1922 as Baltimore & Ohio #4480 (serial #55869), it was versatile in freight and passenger service. Unfrotunately after nearly 35 years of service, it was retired and scrapped in August of 1957 at the Mt Clare yard in Baltimore, MD Just prior to retirement, the loco was assigned a new number #453 but probably was not actually renumbered before the scrapper's torch came calling. Specs - Q-4b class, 64" drivers, 220 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine wt of 327,400 lb, tractive effort of 63,200 lb. An unknown photogrpaher took this photo and no exact day in August of 1956 was given..
