Description:
Built by Baldwin in the latter years of steam locomotive construction of 1944 was B&O 2-8-8-4 #657. Originally it was BO #7607 (serial #70069), it was renumbered in 1956 to make room for diesels on the roster. The massive locomotive was scrapped two years later in 1958. - Specs - EM-1 class, 64" drivers, impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, four 24x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 628,700 lb, impressive tractive effort of 115,000 lb. BO 2-8-8-4 #661 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:
Massive brute built by Baldwin in 1944 for the Baltimore & Ohio RR. According to www.steamlocomotive.com, "the EM-1's were the last articulated steam locomotives built for the B&O. Actually, the B&O did not want the EM-1's. Instead they wanted diesels. However, because of restrictions imposed by the War Production Board, the EM-1s were delivered from Baldwin in 1944 (7600 - 7619) and 1945 (7620 - 7629). For this wheel arrangement, they were relatively modest in size, but very successful. Specs - EM-1 class, nee-7611, 64" drivers, impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, 24x32" cylinders, engine weight of 628,700 lb, impressive traction effort of 115,056 lb. Description:
Massive and powerful, this articulated 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive was the last steam to be built for the Baltimore & Onio in 1943. Truthfully, the B&O really wanted diesels but governmental restraints forced the purchase of the EM-1 articulated steam locos. Originally built as BO #7616, it was renumbered in 1956. It lasted until being scrapped in 1960. Although Baltimore & Ohio wanted diesels instead of more steam locomotives, due to the War Production Board restrictions, the massive Yellowstones were built instead. Baldwin built this loco originally as BO #7629 (serial #71511) but it was renumbered late in its life to BO #679 in February of 1957. The loco was dropped from the roster in 1960 and presumed scrapped. Specs - EM-1 class, 64" drivers, impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, four 24x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 628,700 lb, impressive tractive effort of 115,000 lb. No photographer was given.

Beautiful action shot taken by an unknown photographer of the massive B&O 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type locomotive #7600. This was the first of 30 massive Yellowstones built by Baldwin although the B&O had wanted diesels instead. The War Production Board restricted diesel building so these were built instead. The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO 650 and retired in 1960. Description:
Massive and powerful are the two adjectives for this 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomtoive built by Baldwin in 1944 as BO #7601 (serial #70063). The impressive loco sereved quite successfully until dieselization hit the roster. Even then, they were occasionally pulled back into action, even to head up a few passenger trains! What a sight that would have been! The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO 651 and dropped from the roster in 1960. No photographer was listed for this photo.

Built by Baldwin in 1944, the last of this class was retired in 1960. Quite an impressive piece of power in this Baltimore & Ohio 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive #7618. Built by Baldwin in 1944 (serial #70080). the loco was fit to handle long drags of coal and freight cars in the Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Vriginia and Ohio areas. Near the end of its life in 1956, it was renumbered to BO 668 in 1956 to make room for new diesels on the roster. The beautiful machine was scrapped in 1960. Description:
Built by Baldwin in 1944 as Baltimore & Ohio 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type #7619 (serial #70081) served the B&O well as motive power for long drags of coal and freight cars. This loco met the scrapper's torch earlier than most of its sisters when it was "vacated" in September of 1956 at Bayshore, MD and then sold for scrap in November of 1956. Description:
Although not the B&O's first choice of loco to order, the War Production Board restricted diesel orders so these 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone steam locomotives were the only power that B&O could order. Built by Baldwin in June of 1945 as BO #7621 (serial #71503), it proved to be up to the task of handling long drags of coal and freight cars especially in the Cumberland area. The loco was eventually pushed to the side of the roster starting with its renumbered in 1956 to BO #671 and then dropped from the roster completely in 1960. Description:
Abosulutely beautiful and iconic shot of the massive B&O 2-8-8-4 #7626 in action heading up a long drag of freight cars. Built by Baldwin in July of 1945 (serial #71508), the loco served the B&O well. However technology was against this massive loco - diesels soon took over the roster and slowly pushed these massive brutes over the edge. The loco was first renumbered in February of 1957 BO 676 to make room on the roster for new diesels. Then the scrapper's torch ended its career in 1960 after barely 15 years of service.
