In the foreground are two handsome youngsters whose names are not recorded. Towering behind them is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 08 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, then withdrawn from service and disassembled due to safety concerns, and still not reassembled to wholeness. Description:  Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in April of 1966. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5716, an EP-22 built by GM-EMD in October of 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. In this context, it's powering a passenger train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. On display at the left is PRR engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 08 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, then withdrawn from service and disassembled due to safety concerns, and still not reassembled to wholeness. Description:  AHC. Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in November of 1977. At the left is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 08 June 1957, and restored for excursion service during 1987-1988. Meanwhile, at the right, a three-unit Conrail TOFC train rounds the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 08 June 1957, restored for excursion service in April of 1987, withdrawn from service and disassembled because of safety concerns, and still not reassembled to wholeness. Looks to me like this photo was taken from a passing train, perhaps from the cabin car of the westbound freight train visible across Burgoon Run.

The sign above the locomotive proclaims: "Altoona Car Shop: Home of the K-4 Locomotive Restoration Program." This locomotive is now 104 years old!
