Saturdays train was nothing special, but Sundays moved the parlors that would bring the weekenders home back to Montauk after servicing in Jamaica, and was usually a long train, 12-14 cars, and got a pair of GP 38s. A Ronkonkoma train, one of only a few to make the Republic stop, slows for the platform during the evening rush. Evidence of the upcoming electrification is apparent. The third rail is already in place, but will not be energized for another year or so, and the structure for the signals at an interlocking yet to be built is overhead, awaiting the new position lights. The old signal is showing a stop in the distance. |
