Description:  Here is the Association of American Railroads' stock photo #5919. Caption On Reverse: "Ignitron freight locomotive in service on the Pennsylvania Railroad. This 6,000-horsepower locomotive was built in 1951." Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #4995 and #4996. Both are E-3B (B-B-B) electrics built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in June of 1951, rated at 3,000 horsepower each, and retired in June of 1965 after just 14 years of experimental service. Description:  Here is a photo taken by Mr. Bert Pennypacker. It was published originally in the December 1951 issue of "Trains & Travel" magazine, page 8. Partial Caption: "Pennsylvania No. 4996 (above) is one of four new experimental 3000 h.p. electric freight units being built for the road by Westinghouse. It has been tagged a 'substation on wheels,' because its pantographs draw A.C. power from the catenary and a mercury rectifier tube converts it to D.C." which then powers the traction motors. #4996 is an E-3B (B-B-B) built by Westinghouse and Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in June of 1951 and retired in June of 1965 after just 14 years of revenue service. The date and the location are not recorded.

Engine #3768 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1920, streamlined in 1936, and retired in October of 1953. Middle Photo Caption: "The latest thing in electric motive power is this beautiful two-unit Westinghouse job, shown leaving Philadelphia for a fast run to Patomac Yard." Engine #4996 is an E-3B built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton and Westinghouse during June of 1951 and retired in June of 1965. Bottom Photo Caption: "No. 5786, typical of PRR's diesel fleet, pulls out of Chicago on Eastbound run." Engine #5786 is a BP-20 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in December of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, regeared and reclassified as a BF-16Z, and retired in September of 1962.
