Once CP acquired the D&H, they made a big deal of the fact that they now had a through route for grain traffic from the midwest to the Atlantic in the United States, though part of that route was through Canada. They dubbed it the "Niagara Connection" for its border crossing at Niagara Falls. The first "official" train, complete with power from the three component roads, D&H 7309 leading, had a press release and ceremony noting its crossing at Niagara, even though the trains actually started running between Minneapolis and Albany the previous October. We see the first train at Dalton NY, near MP 352. I was travelling from Buffalo with some colleagues from work, so this was the only photo I was able to get. |

Actually, I used to see it all the time. Signal 216-2, the distant signal for CP Johnson, was easy to see, just hard to photograph. You could see it from the NY 201 overpass to the west, but stopping there to take a picture was out of the question due to traffic. This was a walk in from the old Broad St crossing. I wish I had done it a little more often. The offset lights were a peculiarity of northeastern railroading not seen much in other parts of the country. HAN 1X passes on its way to Buffalo. |

Earlier this year, I shot BUOI here in a spring scene with the forsythia in bloom, and the green trees still short. Theyre getting bigger, now starting to obscure the train. In a couple of years, theyll make a photo here impossible. A GATX leader has what looks like is an 892 coal train. Note the PLM unit. It is in an SD45 carbody, and was one of the EMD test bed units for the 645 engine in the 1960's. |

Train 309 rolls west along the Susquehanna behind two units that would later get the "golden rodent" and become fixtures on the short lived 416 and 417 trains from Saratoga to the Bronx. Today they are headed to Buffalo with none other but an ex PC E 8 tucked in behind. |

I was headed to work one morning, came down the hill from my house to find this 253 going past Campville. I beat it to the straightaway from MP 231 to 232, and was able to get it coming out of the sun as it passed signa; 231-1. Kinda artsy, but I like it. |
