Album Info:This sequence of photographs was taken on an August morning in the BML Yard at the eastern end of the railroad. Today this is all gone and a new ship yard has taken its place. The outside braced former MEC box car is now at the Downeast Scenic in Ellsworth where it is used as an office and tool storage. Some history...: The Belfast & Moosehead Lake RR was chartered in 1867 and in large part financed by The City of Belfast with 30 year six percent bonds and to a lesser degree by other towns along the line as well as a few private investors. Ground was broken at Belfast in 1868 and the last spike was driven in Brooks 2 years later. The 33 mile RR cost $25,900/mile to construct. The Maine Central leased the line from 1870 to 1926 when business started to decline. Description:  Now here is something you don't see every day. European & US couplers. During this period the BML was running a Swedish steam locomotive & trainset. So their locomotives were outfitted for both systems. The Downeast Scenic bought BML #54 a coupld years ago and it's bumbers were laying on the scrap pile last time I saw them.... /DL
