AT&SF 4-6-0 2438
Title:  AT&SF 4-6-0 2438
Description:  AT&SF 4-6-0 2438 at Claremont, California on an unknown day in December 1976, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a narrow gauge outside frame locomotive, not likely originally AT&SF. The web site steamlocomotive.com places this locomotive in Keizer Station Mall, Salem, OR, and indicated it was originally Ferrocarril Coahuila-Zacatecas No. 6, built by Baldwin in May 1904 (c/n 24252) as a Pacific-type (4-6-2). In 1965 it was sold to Early West Railways, Inc. at La Verne, CA, for a railroad theme park which did not succeed. This locomotive was moved to a railroad theme restaurant (the location pictured here) in Claremont, which did not succeed. In 1981 it was donated to the City of Claremont, CA, who moved it to College Park, until the asbestos scare, when the city put it up for sale. It passed through a couple of owners (one of whom displayed it in Paris, CA) before ending up in Salem, Oregon.

AT&SF GP40X 3806
Title:  AT&SF GP40X 3806
Description:  AT&SF GP40X 3806 at Corwith Yard, Chicago, Illinois, December 28, 1986, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1978 (c/n 776054-5), eventually becoming BNSF 3036. This is one of ten GP40X locomotives built for the AT&SF, one of 23 ever built. The GP40X was a pre-production version meant to test technologies later incorporated into EMD's 50-series locomotives GP50 and SD50. Ten GP40X were delivered with an experimental HT-B truck design that became an option (but never used) on the production GP50.

AT&SF GP40X 3808
Title:  AT&SF GP40X 3808
Description:  AT&SF GP40X 3808 at Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 3808 was built in May 1978 (c/n 776054-7) and became BNSF 3038 on May 15, 1998. It is seen here as part of EMD's trade show exhibit on the site of the Illinois Central's Central Station, which had been demolished in 1974. At the time of this photo, I was employed by a company with offices on the 52nd floor of the Standard Oil Building (later, the Amoco Building, after they became aware of the acronym of the original name), which is the tall white building behind the 50 Series banner. I looked out my office window and noticed a lot of activity where normally there was just empty tracks. I decided to check it out on my lunch hour. As it happened, I was dressed in a business suit so no one questioned my presence without credentials.

AT&SF SD26 4668
Title:  AT&SF SD26 4668
Description:  AT&SF SD26 4668 at Corwith Yard, Chicago, Illinois, September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1960 as AT&SF SD24 968 (c/n 25878) on EMD Order 5617, it was renumbered to 4568, rebuilt to SD26 4668, retired by the AT&SF December 1986, sold to Springfield Terminal becoming ST 640. The Santa Fe SD24's were rebuilt at San Bernardino between January 1973-78, upgrading the locomotives to the then-current technologies. Included in the upgrade was replacement of the troublesome high voltage and transition circuitry with EMD's Dash 2 circuit cards, replacement of the 16-567D3 with a new 16-645D3 prime mover, which in turn boosted a unit's horsepower rating from 2,400 to 2,625, and installation of a central air intake and filtration system. The air intake modification created a hump on the roof behind the cab, forcing the air reservoir tanks (which had occupied that position) back along the roof. The as-built low short hood and one-piece windshield over the nose was retained, although in later years the one-piece windshield was changed to two-piece to have the same size and shape windshield glass across several classes of Santa Fe locomotives and simplify maintenance part stockpiles. The original SD24 blower bulge was replaced with a second generation blower housing. Some (but not all) received a cab roof air conditioner.

AT&SF SD45u 5373
Title:  AT&SF SD45u 5373
Description:  AT&SF SD45u 5373 at Springfield, Missouri on October 6, 1994, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5373 was built in June 1970 as AT&SF SD45 5621 ( c/n 36500 ) on EMD Order 7267, and rebuilt to SD45u 5373 in November 1983. I'm confused by the MKM on the cab. One source states the Santa Fe had contract with Morrison Knudsen for maintenance of this locomotive, another source states the locomotive was sold to M-K and leased back to the Santa Fe. Any help on this matter would be appreciated.
