CB&Q E8 9948B
Title:  CB&Q E8 9948B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9948B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 28, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q was in the process of converting the suburban rolling stock from the 1920's era single level coaches (rebuilt in 1948-50) to Budd bi-level gallery cars. At least one Budd car was added to each suburban train, as seen here, to give the commuters a feeling of progress.

CB&Q E8 9948A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9948A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9948A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The power car (next to the locomotive, which contains a diesel-generator set for car lighting) was typically on the other end (west end) to keep the noise an fumes away form passengers boarding in Union Station. For some unexplained reason, it has been turned and is on the east end.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9948A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9948A at Aurora, Illinois on June 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This turntable was located adjacent to the depot in Aurora specifically to turn locomotives assigned to the Dinkys (commuter trains). By the date of this photo, the turntable would soon no longer be needed as the push-pull cab cars were arriving on the Burlington.

CB&Q E8 9948B
Title:  CB&Q E8 9948B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9948B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 12, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1950 (c/n 11704) on EMD Order 2023A, became BN 9954 sometime after March 2, 1970, was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972 becoming 347, was retired May 28, 1975 and sold for scrap to Naporano Iron and Metal Company, Newark, New Jersey. The E8's in this order were equipped with fabricated grills covering the carbody air intakes (just below the roof and above the porthole windows), and painted side panels. Many CB&Q E7's and E8's were retro-fitted with stainless steel panels during shopping. This particular E8 retained its painted panels to the end.

CB&Q E7 9949
Title:  CB&Q E7 9949
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9949 at Denver, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler Built in September 1947 (c/n 4501) on EMD Order E792A, it became BN 9925 and was retired in September 1970. This unit is the only E7 on the CB&Q roster that did not have a suffix letter. There was only one other single E7 (9937A), all the other E7's were ordered in pairs. Also, the first E8 was numbered 9937B, and there was a single E8 numbered 9949A. I cannot explain why this unit was not numbered 9937B.

CB&Q E8 9949A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9949A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9949A westbound a little east of Naperville, Illinois on April 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Golf anyone? About two to three miles behind this location was the station at Lisle, and there was about ten miles to the next station at Npaerville. So this was generally a location where the hogger could haul back on the throttle and see what the locomotive could do. Just after Naperville was another ten miles or so to Aurora where the same test was possible sometimes at three digit speed.

CB&Q E7 9949
Title:  CB&Q E7 9949
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9949 on a westbound Dinky at Naperville, Illinois on April 28, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1947 (c/n 4501) on EMD Order E792A, it became BN 9925 sometime after the March 2, 1970 merger and was traded to EMD on an order for SD45's September 14, 1970. This particular unit is numbered above the rest of the E7's, which were numbered 9916A-B through 9937A, and in A-B pairs except for the last unit, 9937A. Logic would seem to have this unit numbered 9937B, but 9937B turned out to be the first E8. To further confuse the issue, there was a single E8 numbered 9949A, with the first couple of E8 orders numbered 9937B, 9938A-B through 9948A-B, and 9949A. So far, I can find no explanation for this sequence anomaly.

CB&Q E8 9949A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9949A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9949A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 28, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1950 (c/n 11762) on EMD Order 2023A, it became BN 9949, was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972 becoming AMTK 343, was retired May 25, 1975 and sold for scrap to Precision National. According to CB&Q Chicago and Aurora Divisions Employees Timetable No. 10, in effect on this date, gallery cars were restricted to a maximum speed of 75 mph, and this train is likely in that neighborhood as he approaches his stop at Naperville, about a half mile down the track.

CB&Q E8 9949A
Title:  CB&Q E8 9949A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9949A westbound on Train #25, the North Coast Limited, at Naperville, Illinois on June 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the June 1965 edition of The Offical Guide, this train consisted of the following equipment (not necessarily in this order on this date) behind the Budd stainless steel baggage car: mail/dormitory, flat top coaches (westbound #'s C-251, C-253, C-254), dome coaches (C-250, C-252), Slumbercoach (SC-25), Lewis and Clark Traveler's Rest Buffet-Lounge, Dining Car, Pullman Sleeping Cars and Dome Sleepers (257, 255, 256, 258), and until 1967, the Observation-Buffet-Lounge-Sleeper (259). An interesting footnote in The Official Guide states: Remains not carried on westbound North Coast Limited. Banana messenger, blind and attendant, caretaker, charity, circus or show, clergy, Drover, D.V.S., V.A.H., reduced rate tickets will not be honored on the North Coast Limited west of Saint Paul through September 30 and December 1 through January 15, but will be honored between Chicago and Saint Paul. Employees reduced rate tickets will not be honored on either CB&Q or NP during this restricted period.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9949
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9949 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1947 (c/n 4501) on EMD Order E792A, it became BN 9925 and was retired in September 1970. It is seen here on an eastbound Dinky, with the power car on the east end, and unusual situation. Typically, the power cars were kept on the west end of the train to keep the noise and exhaust to the far end of Union Station.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9949A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9949A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Here's a friendly wave from Train #48, the Black Hawk, which also had parts of Northern Pacific's Train #2, The Mainstreeter, and Great Northern's Train #28, The Western Star. The Western Star arrived at Minneapolis early enough to allow passengers to transfer to CB&Q's Train #24, the Afternoon Zephyr, which departed Minneapolis at 2:50 PM CST, for a quicker arrival in Chicago at 9:55 PM CST, but there was not enough time to allow transfer of the rolling stock, which arrived on this train the next morning at 6:40 AM CST. The Mainstreeter's passengers were not as fortunate, and arrived on this train. This combined operation began in 1955 and ended in 1970.

CB&Q E8 9964
Title:  CB&Q E8 9964
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9964 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 1, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9964 was built in August 1952 (c/n 16705) on EMD Order 2048A, became BN 9964 and was sold for scrap May 28, 1975 to Naporano Iron & Metal, Newark, New Jersey. There appears to be ample power on this three car Dinky. It was the practice of the CB&Q to rotate the passenger locomotives between suburban commuter trains (Dinkys) and Zephyr assignments, generally lasting about a week. At the end of the week, the E's assigned to suburban service were all in Aurora. The locomotives were generally ganged up and returned to Chicago for service and rotation into Zephyr service. On late Friday evening, as many as five or six E units would head a single gallery car back to Chicago. This is Saturday morning, and this Dinky has an extra locomotive which will likely be on a Zephyr in a day or so.

The train on the left, headed by E8 9976 is a westbound Dinky braking for the station at Naperville, and the train on the right, headed by E8 9964 is Train #1, the Denver Zephyr, probably doing his allowed speed of 75 mph.

CB&Q E8 9964
Title:  CB&Q E8 9964
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9964 eastbound on Train #18, the California Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on March 1, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1952 (c/n 16705), the first of six E8's built on EMD Order 2048. These six units were purchased by the Burlington to complete the dieselization of the suburban service, with the last steam powered dinky running a month after delivery, September 26, 1952. These E8's were the first delivered to the Q with stainless steel side panels and Farr Air grills. The previous orders of E8's had painted panels, and some of the earlier units were subsequently retrofitted with stainlees steel panels. This unit became BN 9964 after the merger and was retired and sold for scrap May 28, 1975.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9965
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9965 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 30, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I've noted on the slide mount that this was Train #1, The Denver Zephyr. There are a lot of baggage cars, unusual for the DZ, so my guess is that this is a section of the DZ, possible the Second Section, since the class lights are not lit.

This might be a late-running Train #14, a Lincoln - Chicago train scheduled to move express, later meat and packing house products in reefers and TOFC, with a 3:25 AM arrival in Chicago. and if so, he's about five or six hours late. He's also running eastbound on what was normally the westbound main.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9968
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9968 westbound on Train #17, the California Zephyr, at Eola, Illinois on January 8, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1952 (c/n 16709) on EMD Order 2048A, became BN 9968, was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972 becoming 351, was retired May 28, 1975 and sold for scrap to Naporano Iron & Metal Company, Newark, New Jersey.

On this date the lines of the California Zephyr are interrupted by a Havelock-built baggage car substituting for the usual Budd bagage car. There is an extra flat top coach behind the baggage car, and another flat top coach is between the first two dome cars, indicating that the usual second (of four) dome coaches has been pulled for service. On the left are a few out of service heavyweight coaches which will likely make the journey across the main line to the rails on the far right, the interchange tracks with the EJ&E and the leads to the Eola Reclamation Plant, where most likely they will be cut up and sold for scrap. To the right of the Zephyr is a cut of cars coming off the EJ&E, which passed over the CB&Q just beyond the signal bridge in the background.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9970
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9970 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I marked the slide mount as Train Number 30, the Ak-Sar-Ben (Nebraska spelled backwards) Zephyr, a daily train departing Lincoln at 9:00 PM and arriving in Chicago at 7:50 AM. On this photo date, the train includes a couple of new Budd gallery coaches in the consist at the head end. The cars were delivered to the CB&Q at Lincoln to avoid Illinois sales tax, and returned to Chicago for revenue service in this manner.

CB&Q E8 9971
Title:  CB&Q E8 9971
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9971 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 13, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1953 (c/n 18313). Usually, the CB&Q would have attached a power car to this train. The power car was a modified commuter coach with a generator, but in this case certain locomotives were modified to allow some of the power from the locomotive's auxiliary generator to be routed to the coach's lights. The air conditioning was provided by onboard Waukesha engine powered by four propane cylinders on each bilevel coach. The heat was steam. There wasn't a lot of electrical demand in those days.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9971
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9971 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 18, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is Train #108 departing Naperville at approximately 6:53AM, a daily except Saturday and Sunday dinky (commuter train) to Chicago, making most of the local stops between Naperville and Chicago, arriving at Union Station at 7:46AM if it maintains the schedule. According to the CB&Q Employees Timetable #9 for the Chicago and Aurora Divisions (Effective at 12:01AM CST, Sunday, October 25, 1964), this train did not depart from the Aurora Depot, so it departed directly from the coach yard, arriving at its first stop, West Eola at 6:40AM, and stopping at Eola at 6:43AM.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9972
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 at Aurora, Illinois on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sinnce the days of steam, arriving Dinkys ( commuter trains ) at Aurora required the power to be turned for the return trip to Chicago. A turntable was located behind the Aurora Depot for that purpose, as seen here. In less that a year from this photo date, six Budd gallery cars with control cabs would arrive and all but eliminate this chore.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9972
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Of interest to perhaps only CB&Q fans, this locomotive is towing three Budd galley cars and no power car. The equipment behind the third gallery car is another train on the next track. At the time of this photo, an adapted E8 or E9 could power two galley cars with 72 volts from (at least one of) the auxiliary generators, since the only electricity needed on the gallery cars was for lighting. The air conditioning was powered by Waukeska engines mounted on each coach, and heat was provided by the locomotive's steam generator. So either this was an experiment or one of the galley cars was deadheading, just my best guess.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9972
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9972 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is a Monday morning Dinky (commuter train), one of 30 Dinkys that the CB&Q dispatched in a 24 hour period out of Aurora to Chicago Monday through Friday, with a corresponding number returning. This particular train has the 7100 series coaches in tow, with one Budd bi-level coach at the rear of the train, and a power car carrying the markers. The class PA-14 7100 series coaches were built in the 1920's by the CB&Q with open ends, upgraded in 1949-1950 with enclosed ends and air conditioning, and given a paint scheme of forest green body, tan window panels, yellow stripes and lettering, aluminum roof, and black underbody. By the late 1960's, the PA-14's were withdrawn from suburban service, some lasted into the BN era in MOW service.
