Description:  Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad ( Erie Lackawanna by this photo date ) MU coach 2539 at Newark, New Jersey on an unknowen day in June 1965, Koadachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Between 1929–1930 Pullman and General Electric constructed 141 new electric multiple units for the suburban service. These were numbered 2500–2640. Each car could seat 84 passengers. They were paired with 141 trailer coaches and operated until 1984.

The S1 was built as Erie 307 in October 1946 (c/n 74962), classed SA-6 on the EL, and became BEDT 25 in 1968. Number 505 was built in December 1946 as Erie Alco S2 505, classed as SA-10 on the E-L.

Description:  Erie Alco S1 307 and EL Alco RS3 1047 stopped and picking up orders at Pullman Junction on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The S1 was built as Erie 307 in October 1946 (c/n 74962), classed SA-6 on the EL, and became BEDT 25 in 1968. The RS3 was built as DL&W 909 in April 1951 (c/n 78577), renumbered 1047 and classed as MFSA-16D-4 by the EL sometime after the 1960 merger and was retired in October 1976, rebuilt in July 1978 as CR DeWitt Geep 9994 by replacing the Alco Model 244 prime mover with an EMD Model 567 from a scrapped E8. As far as I know, the S1 was not equipped for MU, so this looks like the RS3 is assigned to move the S1, likely the EL needed a switcher somewhere in a hurry.

Alco built this S2 for the Erie in November 1946 (c/n 73891), classed as a SA-10 by EL. On the left is the 47th Street station, actually a two story structure (the railroad is elevated over city streets), which I believe was built by the C&WI and also used by the Erie, C&EI and Wabash.

Still painted for its original owner, this locomotive is (at the time of this photo) employed by the Erie Lackawanna. It was built in June 1949 (c/n 76778), classed as SA-10 by the Erie (seen under the road number on the side of the cab), classed as MSA-10 by the EL, I suppose accounting for the MU capability of this locomotive.

EL E8 813

Description:  Erie Lackawanna Railroad E8 813 at 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It is seen here passing the 47th Street station heading the daily Train No. 5, The World's Fair (also known as the Lake Cities), having departed New York City's Rockefeller Center Terminal at 6:40 PM (motor coach and ferry to Hoboken, New Jersey), departing Hoboken at 7:30 PM, and if all goes well, it will arrive at Chicago's Dearborn Street Station at 4:05 PM, a little over 23 hours and one time zone later. The last time the EL's predecessor, the ERIE, used the station was September 29, 1935. I believe this was a Union Station, serving several railroads (Erie, Wabash, Monon, C&EI, and I think the C&WI had a single commuter train), I'm researching that. It appears to have been built in 1906, demolished in the 1990's. The September 15, 1906 Railway And Engineering Review states the following:

It will be remembered (from the March 17, 1906 issue) that the station is of Bedford lime stone roofed in slate. The tracks on either side of the building are for passenger traffic, being spread 70 feet apart, to provide room for the building. The main waiting room of this station is 30X70 feet, occupying the whole width of the building, between the women's waiting room at the extreme north of the building and the ticket office at the south end of this building.The floor of this room is composition tile, the walls are finished in tile, and the ceiling is plastered between false beams.

Description:  EL E8 824 at Newark, New Jersey, June 1965, exact day unknown and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built as Erie E8 824 in February 1951 (c/n 12222) on EMD Order 2027A, it retained the Erie road number on the EL, classed as PE-22. It later became CR 4013, was retired in January 1978 and scrapped by Naparano in October 1979. In the background is 'blue coal', that's how it appears on the building to the left, single quote and lower case spelling. I'm not sure if that was a brand name, or if they actuallly sold coal that was a blue color. Someone might leave a comment if they know what 'blue coal' was.

EL PA1 854

Description:  Erie Lackawanna PA1 854 a little south of 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on January 9, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1949 (c/n 76912) as Erie PA1 854, it became EL class PA-20 854 and was traded to EMD for new power in 1969. Scrawled on the side are the words: DIRT TEST DO NOT WASH (not my writing), and it appears the test is going well. The Erie rostered 12 PA1's (#'s 850-661) and two PA2's (#'s 862-863), and according to the December 1986 issue of Mainline Modeler Magazine, "The Erie's twelve PA1's spent much of their early lives in joint P&LE Cleveland - Youngstown - Pittsburgh service, but even made trips to Dearborn Station in Chicago, albeit often trailing E8's. Their black and yellow livery gave way to green and gray and eventually to Erie Lackawanna's gray and maroon. In 1951 a pair of PA2's were added to the roster. By the 1960's the PA's had become freight haulers out of Marion, Ohio and survived in this service until at least 1968."

Description:  Erie Lackawanna PA1 855 at about 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to an old City of Chicago map I have, this location was known as Lowe Park, approximately 52nd Street and Normal Avenue. The Erie and later, the EL had a small yard and engine facility at that location. This locomotive was built as Erie PA1 855 in September 1949 (c/n 77103) and retained that road number on the EL, classed PA-20. No longer in passenger service, it was re-geared for freight service, although the steam heat connection is still visible through the slot at the bottom of the pilot. It was traded to EMD for new power in 1969.

This locomotive was built in September 1949 as Erie PA1 856 (c/n 77104), one of 12 Erie PA1's numbered 850-861. They retained the Erie road numbers when they became Erie Lackawanna locomotives (class PA-20 on the EL), and at the time of this photo, the PA1's had been re-geared for freight service. All were traded to EMD for new power during 1969.

Built in March 1952 (c/n 79669) as DL&W 913, it became EL 1047 after the 1960 merger, CR 5267 after the 1976 merger, and was rebuilt to DeWitt Geep 9930 in May 1979. This particular RS3 shows carbody filters instead of louvers, an improved design to trap dirt and sand particles from being ingested by the prime mover.

Alco built this RS3 for the DL&W as number 918 in March 1952 (c/n 79674), and it became EL 1056 sometime after the October 17, 1960 merger. It appears to have acquired a modified fuel tank. It was retired in January 1978 and scrapped in October 1981.

Description:  Erie Lackawanna SD45 3624, at an unknown location on an unknown day in October 1978, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in May 1968 (c/n 33939) on EMD Order 7104, classed as MFE-36D-6 on the EL, it became CR 6089 and was traded to EMD on a SD50 order sometime in 1984 and scrapped. I left the location as Chicago because it looks like Proviso, but I might be wrong.

Description:  Erie Lackawanna SDP45 3638, date, location, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This slide was purchased at a hobby shop for 25 cents. There were no notes on the slide mount. Any info would be appreciated. This much I know: Built in June 1969 (c/n 34979) on EMD Oder 7174, became CR 6999, and later NS 6999. Although built on a SDP45 frame and classed as such, it carried no steam generator. It was built on the longer frame to accommodate the larger fuel tank requested by EL.

Description:  Erie Lackawanna F7 7111 at Croxton Yard, Secaucus, New Jersey on an unknown day in July 1972, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. The slide is stamped HJB COLL. This locomotive was built in January 1950 as Erie 711A (c/n 10112) on EMD Order 6006A, becoming EL 7111 upon Erie's merger with the DL&W. The track in the foreground can't be too important, there is only one bolt at each rail joint.

Title:  EL F7 7134
Description:  Erie Lackawanna F7 7134 at about Lowe Park, around 47th Street and Normal Boulevard in Chicago in Illinois on January 9, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This unit was built in March 1951 as ERIE F7 807D (c/n 13210) on EMD Order 3074A, later becoming ERIE 713D, and when the ERIE merged with the DL&W, it was renumbered to 7134. As illustrated by this locomotive, the renumbering process was to replace the suffix letter A with a number 1 and the letter D with the number 4. You can figure out B & C to number conversions.

Built by Alco in October 1950 (c/n 78186) as Erie 737A, it became EL 7371 (class FA-16D) sometime after the Erie and DL&W merger of October 17, 1960. It was traded to GE sometime in 1965.

EL F3 8051
Title:  EL F3 8051
Description:  Erie Lackawanna F3 8051 at about 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in July 1947 (c/n 4096) on EMD Order E760A as Erie F3A 805A, it became EL 8051 sometime after the October 17, 1960 merger. It has an unusual mix of small numberboards and two carbody portholes.

The renumbering practice at the time of the merger was to substitute numbers 1 through 4 for suffix letters A through D, so, 805A became 8051, 805B became 8052, and so on.
