CB&Q Train Order #116 |
Description: |
CB&Q Train Order No 116, June 17, 1964. This tells the operator at Oakland Tower that CJM (the dispatcher) is giving freight train #462 (a way freight, i.e. CB&Q jargon for local freight) trackage rights (against the normal direction of traffic so it could switch customers sidings). Hoffman Ave., Oakland, and Newport were interlocking towers (plants) on the joint CB&Q/CMStP&P two-track line between St. Paul and the confluence of the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers where at St. Croix Tower the Q turned to cross the St. Croix to enter Wisconsin and the Milwaukee went straight to cross the Mississippi and stay in Minnesota. The order was made Complete at 4:09 PM by Operator Bernard at Oakland Tower. The dispatcher had told Bernard via company phone to Copy From 19. This form was called a flimsie because it was tissue paper and made with several copies using two-sided carbon paper between every other sheet. If it had been addressed to C&E (conductor and engineer) of the train Bernard would have left the tower and hooped it up to each of them (in the engine and caboose). Since this set of tracks was signaled at the interlocking towers and elsewhere this order told Bernard how to set his turnouts and signals. The engineer would follow the signals. In a normal move Bernard would be given no direction. Oakland was a strong arm plant, i.e., signals and turnout were controlled by large levers in the floor and for those turnouts a long distance from the tower the leverman had to have a strong arm (and back) to move all the piping connecting the plant and the turnout. Bernards job title was operator/leverman. |

CB&Q 100, 1963 |
Description: |
CB&Q 100 on inbound Galesburg Local Tr. #2 at Leland, IL, July 9, 1963, 11 minutes late at 9:37 a.m. Jerry Laboda told me, "Built by Pullman as El Paso & Southwestern #1914, built in 1913 as a business car. The car was sold to the CB&Q in January 1925, numbered 100. The car was transferred (sold or leased?) to the Western Pacific in May 1929, keeping its number. In September 1931 it went back to the CB&Q, still as car 100. It was an interesting car... don't know if it is still around or not. Bill Glick's roster book shows that it was sold in 1970 to become a house in Riley, Wisc." |
