This evening my dad and I began our yearly outing to Dubuque, IA and back. Over the course of a few days, we watch trains along various main lines, with the main event for my dad being the Winter Farm Toy Show in Dyersville. While he attends the show, I stay back in Dubuque and watch trains. Of course, however, we usually get plenty of time to watch trains together going to and from Dubuque. This year, we had to cut off a day, but we still managed to get a few trains before the sun set on the Chicago District outside of Valparaiso. First off was westbound NS 26C just down from CP Nickel on the east side of Valpo. |

After returning the rental car, Dad and I moved a little further west as we noticed we had another westbound lined up on CN and with waning light we knew that our only chances of getting it in some sort of daylight would be to move toward Peosta. The IC is very windy as it comes closer to the Mississippi and it isnt very easy to follow, but we found a nice spot with some decrepit codeline just west of the small unincorporated town of Julien and grabbed U706 with a NS leader heading toward Dubuque. |

"Painfully slow" would be the only words to describe how the morning turned out train traffic wise. Both UP and BNSF were silent, and unfortunately the Burlington Junction was quiet as well. We didnt run into another train until we got across the Mississippi into Clinton. CP had a train to cross northbound which had a KCS SD70ACe on the front, but as always UP had other plans and all of a sudden had quite a few trains to get across 5th Street first. The first of them was ZSCG2. And unfortunately after that, we had to call it a day in order to get up to Dubuque to get the rental car before Enterprise closed. So, we didnt get the KCS leader unfortunately, and if you look to the left of this photo you will see that CP is currently using a KCS/CP GP40-2 duo on the Clinton Shuffle. That also, unfortunately, was not in a prime spot for photos. A big goal for us was to get some KCS power leading trains since the recent merger has pulled a lot of KCS power up north into this portion of CP, but so far, nothing yet. Hopefully we will see at least one on this trip. |

Dad wanted to early bird the show the next morning which had me awake well before the sun rose as well. A look at ATCS showed me that the CN local L586 already had a light down to the diamond with BNSF to do their work on the other side of the river. I quickly got ready for the day and went straight for the tunnel at East Dubuque. Not even 10 minutes after arriving and the local was given a light straight across the bridge, across the diamond, and through the tunnel. A SD60 was in use this time around. Definitely nothing like the GT Geep/GP40-2W "North America" scheme pair that it was last year, but Ill take a SD60, especially since CN doesnt run these out on the road very often anymore. |

There was a specific shot that I wanted to get of the train crossing over the Catfish Creek along Old Mill Road on the south side of town last year, but I was unable to do that due to the relentless rain. This year, it was just clouds, so I decided I was going to try to get it this year. While I did get it, somewhat, it caught me off guard and I didnt get everything set the way I was hoping I would. Regardless, I did finally get a train at this location. |

I knew I had back to back CP southbounds coming, but they were still plenty far away, so I went back across the river to see if BNSF would offer anything before I had to go back across for the CP trains. Q-SSECHC was the only train to show before I did. Plenty of southbound BNSF traffic today but hardly anything northbound. |

After working the yard, CN M338 came around the corner and did a crew swap at the Mississippi River Bridge. I figured the widecab SD40-2 would have been dropped here, but it was not. A good thing for me, though, since I was able to get a decent roster shot of it. |
