Viewing Album:  Railfanning the East Bay: Santa Clara Junction-Oakland

Album Info:Images taken along the Union Pacific Coast Sub between Santa Clara Junction and Oakland. Also included are images from UP's Niles, Coast, Oakland, and Warm Springs Subdivisions. These tracks are used by Amtrak and ACE. BART operates its own line between North San Jose and Oakland. This album will include images from the Warm Springs Subdivision (ex-WP/SP) from the Peninsula Subdivision junction to Niles Junction, the Oakland Subdivision (ex-WP) from Niles Junction to CP Melrose in Oakland, the Coast Subdivision (ex-SP) from the Peninsula Sub to CP North Elmhurst in Oakland, and the Niles Sub (ex-SP) from Newark to the Port of Oakland Intermodal Yard.

Title:  SP 1423
Description:  NW2 1423 prepares to depart with todays train on the Niles Canyon Railway. The unit was built for Southern Pacific in 1949, and was renumbered to the 1335 in 1951. After extensive restoration, this NW2 is once again pulling trains.

WP 467
Title:  WP 467
Description:  Western Pacific 467 sits on display next to the Niles depot. The car was repainted in 2009, and at this point, the paint still looks clean. Thats not to remian the case, though. By 2019, the caboose had become quite faded from the Calfornia sun. The car was built by International Car Co. in 1973.

NW2 1423
Title:  NW2 1423
Description:  SP 1423 runs around its train at Niles, California, just east of the depot. The 1423 was built in 1949 as an NW2, and was renumbered to 1335 and painted in the Bloody Nose scheme before coming to Niles Canyon.

Title:  UP and SP Light GP60s
Description:  Two GP60s run light down UPs Warm Springs Subdivision in downtown San Jose. The first unit is GP60 1003, likely built for Southern Pacific or Cotton Belt in 1989. Thes second unit is probably UP 1005, which was photographed with 1003 around this time by TrainSF Rail Productions. The 1003 was built for SSW in 1989 as their 9652.

Title:  East Oakland Geeps
Description:  Two EMD units idle in Union Pacifics East Oakland Yard. UP 1096 and 1419 are a GP60 and GP40-2 respectively. 1419 was an ex-Southern Pacific unit, built in 1980. Behind the engines are a maintenance facility and the BART tracks from San Jose.

The Zephyr Enters Town
Title:  The Zephyr Enters Town
Description:  Arriving at the end of its cross-country journey, P42s 202 and 62 slide into Emeryville with the westbound California Zephyr. The train began its journey two days before in Chicago, and has crossed 6 other states to reach California. AMTK 202 was built in late 2001, while 62 was built in early 1997.

Off To The Coach Yard
Title:  Off To The Coach Yard
Description:  Having deboarded passengers, Amtrak 202 leads the empty California Zephyr consist out of Emeryville and towards the Amtrak yard in Oakland. The California Zephyr had prevously continued to Oakland-Jack London Square Station in the late 1990s, but was cut back to Emeryville to avoid a reverse move down street trackage in Oakland.

Title:  Baretables Northbound
Description:  Two ES44C4s roll past the Amtrak station in Emeryville with a string of baretable well cars. These cars originated in the Port of Oakland, and are most likely bound for the BNSF yard in Richmond, a distance of around 15 miles. The cars will then likely be forwarded north or south to other ports along the Pacific Coast that need them. BNSF 6767, the lead unit, was built in 2011 by General Electric.

Title:  Amtrak Workhorses
Description:  Four passenger diesels sit silently in the Amtrak yard at Oakland. The yard sits just north of the Oakland Jack London Square station. The bridge in the background is the Middle Harbor Road bridge, which connects the Port of Oakland with the rest of Oakland. From right to left are California DOT (CDTX) 2008 and 2011, Amtrak 176, and CDTX 2003. Visible to the right of 2008 is cab car 8313, which appeared to be out of service for repairs or wreck damage.

Description:  Caltrans NPCU 90225 enters the station at Emeryville. 90225 is in charge of San Joaquin #715, a train that operates between Oakland and Bakersfield, California. 90225 was originally built as an EMD F40PH in 1976, and was rebuilt into an NPCU sometime in the late 1990s.
