Adirondack RS 3 |
Description: |
The Adirondack Railway was the reincarnation of the NYC line from Utica to Lake Placid, done for the 1980 Olympic games. By 1981, the operators had gone bust, and the line was again dormant, though there was some equipment stored at Thendara, this RS 3 among them. |

After the Rock Island went bust in 1980, much of it returned to nature, but a few parts took on a second life where there was enough traffic to support operation. A couple of their ex Illinois Central diesels sit near the old Rock station in Elk City. |

No big deal |
Description: |
Seeing CN painted power lettered GTW is not a big deal. GTW was the CN subsidiary that extended from the CN proper to Chicago from Detroit and Port Huron. GTW power in Mississippi, well thats another thing. Ever since CN took over IC, the power has moved around quite a bit. Ive seen IC units in upstate NY, and now units that never went farther south than Cincinnati in the deep south. The trailing unit, on the other hand, is right at home. Its a former IC GP 38-2, used to these climes. This is a local waiting out the weekend at Yazoo City. |

No sports here |
Description: |
The branch lines in Orange county have had somewhat spotty histories in the post Conrail era, and some are no longer active. One that still sees some traffic is the ex CR Maybrook Industrial track, a line once used by the Erie and EL to reach the New Havens yard at Maybrook. That connection dried up, or more correctly, burned, with the fire on the bridge at Poughkeepsie in May 1974. Its present incarnation is run by the East Penn Railway, which has reporting marks ESPN. The unit they use on this and a couple other lines in the area is stored at Campbell Hall when not out on the road, which is where we see it here. |

Second life for a leaser |
Description: |
In the late 1980s, power by the hour was the big new thing, with GE and EMD both maintaining fleets of that nature, both going to work on BN. The GE fleet had LMX reporting marks, with the units numbered in the 8500 series. After they came off lease, the fleet scattered, and the engines were found all over, among other places, on the KCS, and here on a New Mexico short line. This one is at Hobbs. |
