Today is October 9th, 2016, and today my dad and I are up in West Chicago Illinois to watch trains along the UP Geneva Sub and CNs Elgin Joliet and Eastern route. We are up here because earlier today we went to church and the Great Midwest Train show in Wheaton, IL. It was my first time to the show and it was pretty nice! Very large and lots of nice stuff! After the show we grabbed lunch at Boston Market and went to the small park by the diamonds in West Chicago to start off our railfanning day. First, we catch an inbound Metra commuter train banging across the diamonds. |

After the empty table train we had enough time to get across Elburn, IL and see the Metra yard there. The Metra unit that had the Jimmy Johns Subs paint was there but it was not in a place where we could photograph it. So we moved to the other side of town near the large grain elevator and saw we had yet another westbound coming at us. An eastbound also decided to show up, and we didnt know which one was going to get to us first. Thinking that it might be the freight we moved to the other side of the tracks and caught UP 7691 leading a westbound coal train as our 16th train of the evening on the shadow side of the tracks. |

After the manifest went by we decided to continue onto Dekalb. In the process we missed an eastbound coal train and after that the tracks got super quiet and we got to Dekalb and sat for quite some time with no train. We didnt think we would get a train for the rest of the evening so I decided to take a picture of the coaling tower that still stands over the tracks by itself with no train. This is such a neat prop for photography. |

And to make up for missing the mid train DPU on the stack train earlier today, UP 7362 pushes and pulls from the middle of the manifest. Eighteen trains in all today. Wouldve liked more but it wasnt bad for this line. We possibly could have missed some here and there since we dont have ATCS Monitor for the line and trains dont call signals. The show was great and railfanning on UP again was really cool too! Im glad my dad took me on this trip, and we are going to try to make this yearly now. Cant wait for next year! |
