The photos are mostly original b&w scans, some with adjustments and refinements to bring out details. The photographer, date and location are identified when known. Description:
Iconic photo at a small town train station at the turn of the century. This plucky locomotive was one of four built by the Illinois Central Paducah Shops in 1888 to serve the growing passenger needs. Specs - class 1901, 69" drivers, 150 psi boiler pressure, engine weight 96,100 lb, tractive effort 14,369 lb. This is definitely a newer photo copy from the original negative. Unknown photographer.

IC 2-6-0 #2877 - Illinois Central
Description:
Here is another old time steam locomotive, Illinois Central 2-6-0 #2877 (serial #1796), built by the Hinkley Locomotive Works of Boston, MA., in December of 1888. It was originally numbered Illinois Central #421.The loco actually went through four renumberings before its retirement in July of 1929. They were from the original IC #421 to IC #509 in July of 1890, IC #877 in 1896, IC #1877 in May of 1904 and finally IC #2877 in May of 1917 as seen in this photo. Original specs - 56" drivers, 150 psi boiler pressure, 18x24" cylinders, modest engine weight of 100,00 lb and very modest tractive force of 17,547 lb. No exact date was given for this photo. R.H. Beautiful original photo of the 1903 Rogers 2-8-0 Consolidaton built for the Illinois Central. Specs - Class 651, 56.5" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 20x28" cylinders, engine weight of 183,000 lb, tractive effort of 33,699 lb. Rebuilt by IC shops in 1920 - superheater added, slide valves were replaced by 9" piston valves that were driven by Baker radial valve gear. unknown photographer

Description:
Nice photo from a direct scan of the original negative and it appears that it is newly delibered 4-8-2 Mountain type locomotive built by Alco-Schenectady in 1923. No date or location was given but with Mary Rae McPherson's help (see comment below), I now believe it was taken in Chicago, IL, possibly 27th Street. The date is possibly 1923 as it appears to be a newly delivered locomotive. Specs - class 2400, builder #64580, 73.5" drivers, impressive 225 psi boiler pressure, 24x28" cylinders, engine wt 362,500 lb, tractive effort of 57,120 lb. Unknown photographer.

Somewhat fuzzy pic scanned directly from the original negative. The beautiful 4-8-2 Mountain type locomotive was built by Alco-Schenectady in 1923. Although no date or location was given, I believe this is Chicago, IL, possibly 27th Street with the excellent help from Mary Rae McPherson (see comment belo). The date is possibly 1923 as it appears to be a newly delivered locomotive. IC 4-4-2 #1005 - Illinois Central
Description:
Long before an SD70 unit wore the numbers IC #1005, this Rogers Locomotive Works 4-4-2 steam locomotive had the honor of carrying the Illinois Central #1005. Built in 4/22/1903 (according to the Rogers data), the loco was rebuilt sometime in its life and continued to serve the Illinois Central for 36 years before being retired in November of 1939. Rebuilt specs - 79" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 21x28" cylinders, engine weight of 210,000 lb and tractive force of 24,271 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo but it has to be before its retirement in November of 1939.

IC 0-4-0T #2518 - Illinois Central
Description:
Some controversy over the builder of this tank locomotive. Several list Alco and one has Baldwin as the builder but whichever, it is a cute little switcher! No location or photographer listed on this original photo. Thanks to Mr. Gerald (see comment below), this switcher was built by the IC shops in 1888 according to the IC steam records. Specifics - 140 PSI, Weight 72,000 lb; Tractive effort 15,075 lb, Cylinder 16x24, driver 48.5".

Description:
Built by Rogers Locomotive & Machine Works in 1893, this plucky little 2-4-6 tank switcher serviced the Blue Island Yard - note the sign by its smoke stack. Eventually the class was scrapped between 1926-35 with the exception of a couple sold off earlier. Specs - class 242/1424, 56.5" drivers, modest 160 psi boiler pressure, 17x24" cylinders, engine wt 166,000 lb, modest tractive effort of 16,696 lb. This was an original photo by an unknown photographer.

Description:
Here is another 2-4-6 tank switcher built by the Roger Locomotive and Machine Works in 1893. The plucky little tank switcher serviced the Addison Yard in Chicago, hence the name plaque under the smoke stack. This little guy was the last in his class to be scrapped shortly after this photo was taken, May/June of 1935.Specs - class 242/1424, 56.5" drivers, modest 160 psi boiler pressure, 17x24" cylinders, engine wt 166,000 lb, modest tractive effort of 16,696 lb. Description:
Beautiful original photo of Illinois Central #3969. Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in April 1920 for the Vicksport Shreveport & Pacific as their #367, it was acquired by the IC in 1926 when the VS&P was absorbed. Specs - 57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x28" cylinders, engine weight of 217,500 lb, tractive effort of 44,460 lb. The locomotive was scrapped in March 1956. Unknown photographer.

IC 0-6-0 #3285 - Illinois Central
Description:
Proud Illinois Central engineer poses with his unique 0-6-0 #3285 shop switcher at the IC yard in Nonconnah, TN. No date or photographer given for the photo but the loco was on the 1947 IC roster. Number 3285 was built by Schenectady Locomotive Works in June 1891 (c/n 3493) as Newport News & Mississippi Valley #506, becoming IC #192 in 1896, renumbered IC #198, then #200, rebuilt in November 1918 as #3285, receiving a new boiler in the rebuilding process. It was later sold to Pan American Southern Corp., Destrehan, Louisiana.

Unfortunately, no number was visible on this stripped Illinois Central 4-4-2 Atlantic type steam locomotive as it spent its last days sitting in a scrap line somewhere in Illinois - possibly in the Cicero yard where many of these locos ended up. Description:
Beautiful example of the IC shops built 4-8-2 sometime bertween 1937-43. Offering a prodigious power output on 70" drivers, the Mountains gave good service in freight service of all kinds, according to John S. Ingles (in Drury, 1993), "...even coal trains moved faster behind 4-8-2s than they had behind 2-10-2s." Specs - class 2500, 70" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 30x30" cylinders, engine wt 409,500 lb, tractive effort of 78,866 lb. IC 4-6-2 #1143 - illinois Central
Description:
Illinois Central #1143 is caught at the historic 27th Street IC yard in Chicago along the lake shore. If the information is accurate on the back of the photo, the photo was taken soon after the IC shops rebuilt this 1916 Alco-Brooks Pacific. The loco survived until being sold for scrap in April of 1956, some 40 years of service later. Original specs - bldr #56087, 1139 class, 75" drivers, 190 psi boiler pressure, 26x28" cylinders, engine weight of 280,000 lb, tractive effort of 40,758 lb. Unkonwn photographer.

IC 2-10-2 #3004 - Illinois Central
Description:
Long before a GP40 wore the number 3004, this Lima 2-10-2 Santa Fe type locomotive built in January of 1923 held the number, IC #3004. The IC Shops rebuilt the loco in October of 1943 and renumbered it to IC 2727. It fell to the scrapper's torch after retirement in December of 1959. Original loco specs from SteamLocomotives.com - 63" drivers, 190 psi boiler pressure, 30x32" cylinders, engine weight of 382,000 lb, tractive effort of 73,829. Part of the 2901 class were rebuilt into 4-8-2's while the rest had many improvements along the way including raising the boiler pressure to 240 psi. Several differences in online resources can be attributed to the various upgrades that were applied to some and not others over several years. No photographer was listed for this photo.

IC 2-4-4 T #1401 - Illinois Central
Description:
This little Illinois Central 2-4-4-T Huntington type steam locomotive has led an interesting life. Built by the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works in May of 1880 as Illinois Central #213, it worked the passenger service around Chicago. During its life, it has been renumbered several times - IC #221 in 1884, IC #201 in July of 1890, IC #1401 in July of 1900, back to IC #201 in 1934 for the Chicago World's Fair (with Casey Jones as engineer), back to IC #1401 for the 1948-49 Chicago RR Fair. This photo is from the "Wheels A'Rolling" pageant during the RR Fair. It then bounced through a couple of private owners and finally landed at the Illinois Railway Museum in December of 2002. No exact date or photographer was give for this original photo.

Description:
Big, long and powerful are the words to describe this ALCo-Schenectady built 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotive. It was delivered to Illinois Central as their new #2409 (serial #64578) in October of 1923. Somewhere in its life, the IC shops rebuilt it and It was able to serve for a total of 32 years before being scrapped in 1955 when dieselization hit the IC roster. Rebuilt specs - 73.5" drivers, impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 28x28" cylinders, engine weight of 376,500 lb and tractive effort of 65,856 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo.

IC 2-10-2 #2808
Description:
Built by Lima Locomotive Works in March of 1921 originally as Illinois Central 2-10-2 #2939, the loco was rebuilt in October of 1944 by the IC shops and renumbered IC 2808. After nearly 38 years of service, it was retired in December of 1959. Rebult specs - 64.5" drivers, impressive 275 psi boiler pressure with a new boiler, 30x32" cylinders, engine weight of 416,000 lb, and impressive tractive effort of 110,512 lb. Here is another example of a 4-8-2 Mountain type steam locomotive built by ALCo-Schenectady. It was delivered as illinois Central #2459 in November of 1926 (serial #67058). Somewhere in its life, the IC shops rebuilt it and improved the tractive force. It served from 1926 until it was scrapped in january of 1957.
