Album Info:The Utah Railway was organized in 1912 and ran it's first train by 1917. The Utah and Rio Grande share the right of way over Soldier Summit: The westbound track belongs to the D&RGW, the eastbound to the Utah. The Utah Railway was always fun to photograph. Predictable trains, unparalleled scenery, helpers, steep grades and sharply painted locomotive. I hope you enjoy this collection of Utah Railway photos.

MPI 9011
Title:  MPI 9011
Description:  Thistle was a small community where the Rio Grande maintained a helper base. In the spring of 1983, a mud slide created a natural dam that inundated Thistle forcing the evacuation of the residents and shut down the railroad. The Rio Grande detoured over the UP while contractors built a new alignment through Billies Mountain. By mid-July, service was restored over Soldier Summit. The 9011 is on the new alignment near Rio.
