Album Info:Here are ten original photos that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. It was a day-long sojourn for Thomas Harry Lantz and me. We witnessed a great deal of Pennsylvania Railroad action that day. These photos will provide some sense of our adventures.

Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956 after amassing over 2,469,000 revenue miles, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 8 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, withdrawn from service and disassembled because of safety concerns, and is now being restored again for further excursion service.

In this context, they're pulling a mail & express train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East.

Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here are two Pennsylvania Railroad freight trains: one is eastbound (heading right), the other is westbound (heading left). The eastbound mixed-cargo freight is visible in the foreground. The westbound "Yankee Jet" ~ a merchandise express train from Boston to Chicago in 26 hours or less, powered by six GP-9 locomotives ~ is visible in the background. Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #7155 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are EFS-17 road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7155 was constructed in October of 1957. They're pulling a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Pictured at the left is Thomas H. Lantz of Duncansville, Pennsylvania. He was 14 years old at the time! Photo taken at the site of the (demolished) Kittanning Point Station.

All were built by GM-EMD. #5895 is an EP-22 constructed in March of 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. #5715 is an EP-22 built in November of 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. #5868 is an EP-20 constructed in April of 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. In this context, they're pulling a mail & express train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8608 and #8607. Both are APS-24MS road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. In this context, they're pushing a mail & express train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further assignment. Note: No cabin car!

Description:  Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #7128, #7170, and three more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All five are EFS-17M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7128 was constructed in June of 1957, while #7170 was built in October of the same year. In this context, they're pulling a 50-car TrucTrain around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Wave to the head-end brakeman in the second unit! As of 04 July 2016, or 55 years later, #7128 ~ now numbered "7580" ~ is in active excursion service with Steam Into History at New Freedom, Pennsylvania.

Both were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9840 is an EFP-15 constructed in May of 1952, while #9510-B is an EF-15 built in April of 1948 and retired in November of 1962. In this context, they're pulling a westbound string of empty hopper cars around the Curve while passing another train that's on Track 4. Wave to the Fireman!
