Description:  Its April, which means track work. Conrail was always upgrading something, and used literally trainloads of ballast. One of those trains strains to overcome gravity as it gets its 50 cars over the top at the summit.

Title:  Moveable bridge
Description:  North Jersey had a number of moveable bridges over waterways that are no longer navigable, though to look at them, you have to wonder if they ever were. This one is on the ex NYC just north of the North Bergen yard. SEEN poses on the draw which will likely never open again, especially since there is now a road next to it.

Description:  Conrail had a small yard at Lyons which served some local industry, and also as a set off point for trains ENSE and SEEN, which still ran to Enola via the Corning Secondary down through the Grand Canyon of PA and into the PRR Buffalo Line at Jersey Shore. Description:  Conrail by the late 80s had become an intermodal powerhouse, and it was reaching a point where if you spent a day trackside on the ex NYC or PRR, the number of van trains about equalled the merchandise trains. TOFC was still pretty common in those days, and this train was typical.

Description:  Conrail had a lot of 4 axle power, which made sense here on the Water Level Route, which, as the name implies, had virtually no grades. Even as it went on a 6 axle spree, acquiring several hundred C40-8s and SD60s of a couple of variations, it ran a lot of its van trains with 4 motors, as we see on TV 7 with 68 cars here at Wanakah, west of Buffalo.

Description:  We were used to seeing TV 203, though usually it was rolling over Starrucca, or in the Canisteo valley. Seeing it on the Chicago Line was a new experience. Description:  Because the NYS Barge Canal-the Erie Canal-follows the Mohawk River so closely from Amstemdam to Utica, the tracks are never far away. One such place is Cranesville, near Amsterdam.
